Prayer in clothes having images over it
A general ruling for Images (Taswir):
In Islamic law, there is a distinction between images of living beings (humans and animals) and non-living things (landscapes, objects, or abstract logos).
-
Living Beings: Most classical scholars, drawing from authentic Hadiths, consider it Makruh (disliked) or even prohibited to wear clothing with prominent images of living beings during prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once removed a garment (Anbijaniyah) because its patterns distracted him during prayer.
-
Non-Living Objects & Logos: If the logo is an abstract design or a non-living object (like a car, a mountain, or a simple geometric shape), it is generally permissible to wear.
Centralized Point
Now, in case you’re wearing a shirt or trouser having logos/images that shows some living being could be an animal or a person in way that their eyes, ear or whole body clearly shows what they are, then the prayer would be considered as Makruh Tahrimi (highly disliked, bordering on prohibited). You have to pray again.
يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ
“O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (wear your beautiful apparel) at every time and place of prayer…” - 7 - Al-Araf - 31
Tafseer Explanation:
Zina’th (زینت) - Adornment
Ibn Kathir notes that this verse was revealed to correct the practice of the idolators who performed Tawaf naked. Allah commanded the believers to take their “adornment” to every Masjid.
-
Zinah (adornment) here means more than just covering the Awrah (private parts). It refers to wearing clean, proper, and beautiful clothes.
-
Real case: While a sports shirt technically covers the body, does it reflect the “adornment” and “best clothes” mentioned by the Salaf (pious predecessors) in this Tafsir? For a formal meeting with a boss or a king, we wouldn’t wear a racing shirt; we should hold the same, if not higher, standard for standing before Allah.
White Clothing
Ibn Kathir quotes the Hadith: “Wear white clothes, for it is among your best clothes…”

A detailed hadith: Sahih-al-bukhari - 3226 that explains this in multiple chain but with an exception.
- Preference: White is the preferred color because it symbolizes purity and simplicity.
- Comparison: A shirt with a large, bright logo having any animal or living being (regardless how clear they are) is the opposite of this simplicity. While not forbidden solely because of the color, it moves away from the Sunnah of wearing simple, dignified attire that doesn’t draw undue attention.
Goal
Aisha had a thick curtain (having pictures on it) and she screened the side of her i house with it. The Prophet (ﷺ) said to her, “Remove it from my sight, for its pictures are still coming to my mind in my prayers.” Sahih-al-bukhari - 5959
Goal is to move from “What is the bare minimum required?” to “What is most pleasing to Allah?”
Summary
- You may pray if the image/logo is small enough that you can’t clearly see while standing if the cloth is on the ground.
- Avoid wearing cloths having pictures of living being on it, regardless you want to pray in it or not. As its opposite to the Sunnah of our Prophet PBUH
