Laylatul Qadr - Night of Decree
Allah describes it as being “better than a thousand months” (97 - Al-Qadr-97:3). To put this in perspective for your generation: a thousand months is approximately 83 years and 4 months—essentially an entire lifetime of worship compressed into a single night
Hadiths
- “Whoever stands in prayer during laylatul qadr with faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, all of his previous sins will be forgiven” - Sahih-al-bukhari - 1901 | Sahih-muslim - 760 Sahih Muslim 760 has multiple narrations available
- Seek it in last ten nights of Ramadan. Especially the odd nights. Sahih-al-bukhari - 2021
- This month has come to you, and in it there is a night that is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of it is deprived of all goodness, and no one is deprived of its goodness except one who is truly unfortunate. Sunan-ibn-majah - 1644
Signs of following morning
Reference: Sahih-muslim - 762
I heard from Ubayy b. Ka’b a statement made by ‘Abdullah b. Mas’ud in which he said: He who gets up for prayer (every night) during the year will hit upon Lailat-ul-Qadr. Ubayy said: By Allah I there is no god but He, that (Lailat-ul-Qadr) is in Ramadhan (He swore without reservation: ) By Allah, I know the night; it is the night on which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded us to pray. It is that which precedes the morning of twenty-seventy and its indication is that the sun rises bright on that day without rays.
Some other thoughts
When is it?
As per hadiths, yes we know it exists in ODD NIGHTS of last Ash’ra of Ramadan. But the important point is, Prophet PBUH started the counting in reverse order i.e. on the night when nine or seven or five nights remain out of the last ten nights of Ramadan. Which means if that Ramadan is of 30 days, then the nights would be from EVEN counting, instead of ODD.
-
Hence, do not waste any day of last Ash’ra just considering that we’re suppose to do more prayer in odd nights only.
-
If the month has 30 days:
- 9 nights remaining: The night of the 22nd (starting the 21st day).
- 7 nights remaining: The night of the 24th.
- 5 nights remaining: The night of the 26th.
- Note: In a 30-day month, “remaining nights” counting makes even-numbered dates significant.
-
If the month has 29 days:
- 9 nights remaining: The night of the 21st.
- 7 nights remaining: The night of the 23rd.
- 5 nights remaining: The night of the 25th.
- Note: In a 29-day month, the “remaining nights” counting aligns with the odd-numbered dates.
What are we suppose to do?
-
With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, the Prophet (ﷺ) used to tighten his waist belt (i.e. work hard) and used to pray all the night, and used to keep his family awake for the prayers. Sahih-al-bukhari - 2024
-
Referring to another one mentioned above Hadiths
-
dua, that Prophet PBUH taught to Hazrat Aisha R.A: Jami-at-tirmidhi - 3512

- More and more recitation of Qur’an
- Free some time to talk to Allah, ask for forgiveness, ask for Afiy’at
- Increased Azkaar
- Do more sadaq’ah (This is amazing, imagine getting deeds for 1k months)
